Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged immobilization, lack of regular exercise and a diet insufficient in the case of anorexia, or low in calcium and vitamin D are elements that fuel the emergence of illness, and genetic background, advanced age, organ transplantation, amenorrhea and prolonged corticosteroid therapy, eg for the treatment of asthma.

The diet in the prevention pillar

An adequate supply of calcium in a balanced diet throughout life, with particular emphasis on the stages of growth and bone development, is essential to prevent osteoporosis.

The absorption of dietary calcium is favored by certain nutrients such as vitamin D, lactose and ascorbic acid, among other substances. The first two are natural components of milk, but also in other foods independently.

To ensure dietary intake of calcium is necessary:

Take at least 2 servings of dairy a day. In this sense, knowing the amount of calcium that provide various products can be substituted for each other respecting the amount. Thus, the maximum power range without changing the nutritional value thereof.

Include food sources of vitamin D to promote the binding of calcium to the bones. This vitamin is soluble in fat and therefore fat is found in certain foods: whole milk and milk fats like butter and cream, fish liver.
However, there are other substances that interfere with the absorption of this mineral, so it will be necessary not to abuse:

- Bran or whole grains because they contain phytate or phytic acid, which form insoluble salts with calcium and decrease its absorption.
- Phosphorus, which causes a decrease in calcium absorption. Abundant in animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, as well as vegetables and cola soft drinks.
- The protein in the diet, related to a decreased absorption of calcium.
- The snuff and alcohol, decrease bone mineral density.

When osteoporosis is advanced treatment is necessary to include dietary supplements or specific drug that will value the specialist. In this sense, it is noteworthy that combined supplements of calcium and vitamin D are more effective, since they not only prevent femoral bone loss, but also reduce the incidence of hip fractures.

Osteoporosis is not curable, but proper treatment can stop bone loss and fractures. Today diverssos available medications such as bisphosphonates, calcitonin, calcium, fluoride, hormone replacement therapy, ipriflavone, derived from estrogen, steroids, vitamin D and metabolites.
