Normal Dentition
What is the normal adult teeth?
Can be considered a person of 13 years and an adult dentition is complete, if we consider the eruption of wisdom teeth (third molars).
You should have no teeth and will have appeared all of their permanent teeth of nujevo the exception of wisdom teeth, whose appearance does not always happen.
Thus, the normal adult dentition consists of 32 pieces, including wisdom teeth:
Jaw (lower)
4 incisors (palettes) in total: 2 central incisors (1 right and 1 left), and 2 lateral incisors (1 right and 1 left)
2 canines (fangs 1 right and 1 left)
4 premolars (2 right and 2 left)
4 molars (2 right and 2 left)
2 wisdom teeth (third molars: 1 right and 1 left)
That is, a total of 16 teeth in the jaw.
Maxillary (upper)
There is a perfect symmetry between the upper and lower jaw.
4 incisors in total: 2 central incisors (1 right and 1 left), and 2 lateral incisors (1 right and 1 left)
2 canines (1 right and 1 left)
4 premolars (2 right and 2 left)
4 molars (2 right and 2 left)
2 wisdom teeth (1 right and 1 left)
That is, 16 teeth in total.
What is the function of each tooth?
Traditionally, each group assigned a specific function of teeth:
Incisors
The incisors are designed for cutting food. The upper incisors overlap (normal), slightly to the lower order to perform the function of scissors. The incisors were not made for crushing or tearing food, have a single root.
Canine
The canines have one root, thick and long, being one of the most important teeth. Its main function is to tear food and are located on the sides of the incisors.
Premolars
The premolars and molars are used to chew and grind food. The premolars have one or two roots and the molars have two in the jaw, and three roots on the maxilla. Sometimes are fused.
Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth have roots in varying forms: clubbing, crochet, merged, and so on.
Is it important to have a harmonious dentition?
It is important that teeth are a normal and well placed. The upper teeth should fit with the lower properly, without crowding, contacting all the upper teeth with the lower right position.
A mouth to present an adequate morphology (shape) of teeth, good alignment of the teeth of both jaws and a right relationship between the upper and lower teeth, fewer cavities present fewer problems and gingival (gum), a mouth whose alignment is irregular tooth morphology and which is not harmonious.
The way they fit together teeth is called occlusion and occlusion is right and wrong. Incorrect occlusion favors, besides the problems mentioned above, disturbances in the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint with the skull), consisting of joint pain when chewing, masticatory muscle pain, etc..
For all these reasons, are as important orthodontic treatments that attempt to restore the proper relationship between the teeth (occlusion).
