Normal Dentition: Dentition of Children
How is the dentition of children?
The children’s teeth or deciduous teeth are called milk teeth, and is composed of 20 pieces.
Jaw (lower)
4 incisors in total: 2 central incisors (1 right and 1 left) and 2 lateral incisors (1 right and 1 left)
2 canines (1 right and 1 left)
4 molars (2 right and 2 left)
That is, a total of 10 teeth in the jaw.
Maxillary (upper)
4 incisors in total: 2 central incisors (1 right and 1 left) and two lateral incisors (1 right and 1 left)
2 canines (1 right and 1 left)
4 molars (2 right and 2 left)
That is, a total of 10 teeth in the maxilla. Again, there is perfect symmetry between maxilla and mandible.
Baby teeth begin to fall to 6-7 years of age.
We talked about mixed dentition when the child has in his mouth simultaneously teeth and permanent teeth. We must not confuse the eruption of first permanent molars (around 6 years) with a tooth, because this will not have replacement tooth.
As the child grows, the baby teeth fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth. The last permanent tooth appears (if we except the wisdom teeth) is usually the second molar, around 12 years old.
When to use an orthodontic treatment?
Are indicated in both children and adults, whenever irregular tooth to positions of greater or lesser importance.
In the adult can be performed at any age. In children, age at onset of treatment is highly variable, but typically begins around age 8 or earlier.
The average duration of these treatments is 1 to 2 years in both children and adults, depending on the importance of the problem to correct.
The treatment options are many, you can use removable appliances, and anchors attached to the surface of the teeth (braces). These anchors may be metal or not (with aesthetic materials).
In some cases, may use extra-oral anchorage, which are based on the skull.
The purpose of treatment is to restore proper occlusion between the two dental arches, which also includes the improvement and prevention of the above problems arising from incorrect occlusion and aesthetic improvements will be valued highly by the patient and environment.
In any case, frequent visits to the dentist will let you know if for you this type of treatment, its importance and the most appropriate period to cope.
