Juvenile Arthritis: Prevention and Forecast
Duration
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is usually a lifelong disease. However, for many people, symptoms gradually decrease or disappear in adulthood.
Prevention
Since it is unclear what causes juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, there is no way to prevent it.
When To Call a Professional
Call a health professional if a child develops a fever or rash with symptoms of arthritis, such as persistent pain in the joints, swollen joints, if the child limps and if their movements are limited.
Forecast
Because the symptoms and damage caused by juvenile arthritis can vary on a large scale, the prognosis also varies significantly. Some types of arthritis have periods in which the disease intensifies and periods when symptoms subside. Treatment can control symptoms in most people and many children “outgrow” the disease.
However, severe forms of the disease may cause growth problems if you damage the growth plates in long bones. Very sick children may also lose school for long periods and injury to the joint can cause joint problems in the long term. Also, the drugs used to treat juvenile arthritis can cause other problems such as stomach ulcers, weakened bones and liver damage.
