Taking care of the genitalia is essential to prevent vaginal yeast infections. 75% of women suffering from infection in the area. Four specialists’referrals clarify the main questions.
Julia is embarrassed to admit you have vaginal yeast infections. Furthermore, in the last two years have not been to a gynecologist.
She is one of 75% of women who have suffered from yeast infection at least once in their life, according to research by the Latin American Center for Health and Women (CELSAM). However, dare not assume it and not seek medical help.
Speaking of female intimate care is awkward and shameful.
Four specialists related to the area clear the doubts and give answers to the evil that affects thousands of women worldwide.
Mirna Paz (MP), Medical Center obstetrician gynecologist Paradise, Gustavo Mestre (GM), the Clinical Hospital gynecologist, Gustavo González (GG), obstetrasexólogo and Asaida Salas (AS), gynecologist, said:

1. – What is the vagina?
- (MP): A tube from the uterus to the vulva and has a length of about eight centimeters. Part of the genitals.
2. – What causes yeast infections?
- (MP): Fungal infections are a common cause of irritation of the vagina and vulva. Also hormonal changes, contraceptive use, consumption of antibiotics, poor hygiene and sexual contact.
3 .- How can you prevent the fungus?
- (MP): Do not use douches, sprays and scented, not flavored that irritate the vagina, use clean cotton cloth and two or three times a day in the area.
4 .- What is the most common diseases in this area?
- (HB): Bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, trichomoniasis, human papilloma virus, GARDENELLA and mixed infections.
5 .- What causes bad smell in that part of the body?
(MP): Bacteria, viruses or microorganisms that contaminate the body. These are produced by the sperm that are there after sexual intercourse or through infectious processes outside the vagina.
6 .- What are the most effective treatments in this case?
- (MP): That depends on the diagnosis and outcome of the visit. The patient cytology should be performed every year.
7. – Why do women use douche?
- (MP): They think it’s the best way to avoid bad smell, but this type of washing changes the delicate chemical balance in the vagina, causing more sensitive to bacterial infections. You can also spread existing infections in the vagina or cervix to the pelvic organs (uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries).
8. – How efficient and safe are they?
- (MP): For hygiene are very efficient and safe, because they cause damage to the epithelium, which is the wall of the vagina, but it is good to abuse them. Use is recommended every three months.
9. – Is it advisable to do home remedies like vinegar infusion of salt water?
- (MP): That’s unsanitary. The showers are recommended pharmacies.
10. – What are the risks of dental floss?
- (GM): More than a one-piece undergarment is sexual. Using it involves a risk of disease, because the fabric is always in touch with the anus and the vagina, rectum bacteria then crawl to the vagina and is very dangerous. I suggest using comfortable underwear, preferably cotton, to avoid irritation.
11. – Eating habits may influence the acid ph vaginal balance?
- (GM): In some cases. It recommends the consumption of yogurt, it contains lactobacillus, which are beneficial bacteria to the area. Avoid yeast, the use and abuse of antibiotics that result in vaginal mycosis.
12. – What is the most healthy and safe to clean the vagina?
- (GM): We must disregard the most out of toilet paper. Should be washed with soapy water and pH neutral from front to back and dry with a towel for the exclusive use of women.
13. – What hurts the use of tampons?
- (GM): A tool to control the blood. However, it must be less than three hours since, because it makes no sweat genital area and causes a severe infection.
14. – What are the risks of using panty?
- (GM): These are widely used and has been used indiscriminately, you should not, because some are of poor quality and cause irritation. Also because sometimes come with deodorant and is detrimental to the delicate part. Increase humidity and fungi and bacteria proliferate candidiasis, which is more common in these cases.
15 .- intimate cleansing is essential before and after sex?
- (GM): It is hygienic to keep that part clean before sexual intercourse. After sex vagina should be washed with clean water and soap to remove all traces of semen and flow, acting in the growth of bacteria and fungi.
16. – How to clean the private parts of a child to avoid infection?
- (GM): Like the adults. From front to back. After three or four years we must inculcate cleanliness, educate them to maintain hygiene.
17. – Is it possible to resort to the use of creams and perfumes to have a nice smell?
- (GG): The woman has her own scent. Sure, you can use any perfume or cream. If you notice a different odor is because he is sickened by protozoa such as trichomonas vaginalis, which gives a foul odor. In that case you should see a doctor. Now, it is not smearing other aromatic additive to please the couple.
18. – What soaps are recommended to wash this hand?
- (GG): normal soap with neutral pH. It is important that women understand that you should not shave the area completely, because not protect the skin and the soap can irritate.
19. – Yogurt is recommended as a treatment for fungal infections?
- (GG): Yes, you can consume, but more important is to identify the type of fungus. The albic is the most common, which is transmitted by sexual intercourse and the rest of the virus.
20. “For the menopause, can I use lubricant products to moisturize the area?
- (GG): In disparemia menopause occurs, which is the vaginal dryness and in that case should not apply creams. You have to use lotion estrogen or hormone replacement therapies.
21. – To what extent is normal vaginal discharge?
- (GG): If it’s clear, odorless and transparent is normal. While there is itching or engrumoso the patient is fine, but if it is green, frothy and foul is because there are bacteria.
22. – Is it wrong to sleep without underwear?
- (GG): It is a mistake, it is customary for patients. However, do not sleep with vaginal tampons or dental floss.
23. – Is there a possibility of infection when having sex during menstruation?
- (AS): Yes, because it is the shedding of a layer of menstrual flow. This process called endometrial exposes the uterus and when we have sex the semen is mixed with the bleeding and can cause inflammatory reactions.
24 .- How often should visit the gynecologist?
- (AS): At least once a year. But this consultation must be comprehensive. Also depends on the diagnosis and treating to determine the frequency.
25 .- After the pregnancy is more likely than women to have vaginal infection?
- (AS): During pregnancy hormonal changes occur and, therefore, certain infections.

Definition of vaginal mycosis

The vaginal mycosis, also known as vaginal candidiasis, are infections caused by fungi, mostly caused by the yeast Candida albicans, in the intimate area. This causes inflammation of the vagina. The thrush may also affect small and labia (external genitalia).

It is not a disease linked to poor hygiene, but due to a disturbance of the natural vaginal flora with several factors may be the cause.

Fungal vaginal affect many women, almost 75% of women are affected at least once in their life.

Causes of vaginal mycosis

Given that vaginal yeast infections are caused by fungi (usually by the yeast Candida albicans), some factors may promote the development of the excess yeast (Candida albicans is still present in the vaginal area that:

> Hormonal changes (menstruation)
> Pregnancy (often in the 3rd quarter)
> Diabetes
> Medications (antibiotics …)
> Disorders of the thyroid gland
> Stress (read more on this subject the testimony of a patient)
> Pill
> Poor local hygiene, such as when you go to the bathroom, clean the area close to the front to back (vagina to anus) to avoid contaminating your vagina with fungi from the intestines
> Excessive hygiene in the area close
> Clothes that shake or are too plastic
> Age (the elderly are more likely to develop thrush)
> Infection in another part of the body (the immune system “works” too and fungal infections can develop more easily)

Symptoms of vaginal mycosis

When thrush (vaginal candidiasis), itchy red spots appear at first. Then burning, pain and often odorless vaginal discharge is often present. Some redness in the genital area and pain in the vagina may also appear.

To summarize we can raise 3 typical symptoms of thrush [Source: "Guide on the vaginal yeast infection" from Bayer]:

1. strong itching or burning
