Allergy

Definition of Allergies

An allergy is an abnormal reaction and specific body in contact with a foreign substance (allergen). Usually foreign substances do not cause trouble in most subjects.

For allergy occurs, it is necessary that first contact occurred between the allergen and the subject’s body (awareness). Therefore it is often the second contact with the allergen that is most problematic.

There are different forms of expressions of allergies or allergy:
> Asthma
> Atopic dermatitis, eczema, atopic eczema (in general)
> Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
> Conjunctivitis
> Hives
> Allergy drugs
> Food allergies (often it is actually a pseudo-allergy = poor digestion)

The causes of allergies may be multiple, it is usually an overreaction to an allergen, the allergen may be multiple, including:

> Pollen (>> hay fever)
> Mite
> Foods
> Chemicals
> Medicines

Symptoms of allergy

Symptoms of allergy can vary from one type of allergy to the other, but we can distinguish symptoms of mild, moderate and severe.
Obviously a symptom classified as light can be treated by self-medication (ask your pharmacist for advice) which is not the case for moderate symptoms, and especially serious requiring medical attention.

Classification by severity of symptoms of allergy:

> Lightweight: mild symptoms are those that affect a place located in the serving organizations, such as a mild eczema, a congested nose (due to hay fever for example), red eyes. These reactions “invade” not for other parts of the body.

> Moderate: symptoms are called moderates who can spread to other parts of the body. For example, a general itching or difficulty breathing (asthma).

> Serious expressed serious symptoms have been mentioned above. It speaks of anaphylaxis. This can cause a voltage drop very important even lead to a loss of consciousness. This requires an urgent medical consulation. On the one hand to treat the symptoms and other hand to prevent this from happening again (prevention).

Drugs against allergies

Different classes of drugs can treat symptoms of allergy, the use of a class of drugs and a drug form (tablet, spray ,…) varies depending on the type of allergy.

Different treatments to treat symptoms

  • Antihistamines (drugs and combined)

This is probably the drug class best known for treating allergy symptoms (such as seasonal allergies such as hay fever). Antihistamines are found in various medicinal forms: capsules, tablets, nasal spray, eye drops, …

  • Nasal Steroids

Nasal steroids are drugs that are certainly more effective in the treatment of seasonal rhinitis (hay fever).

The side effects were more frequent nasal bleeding and it seems dose-dependent. Lack of study it is not advisable to take these medicines during pregnancy.

  • The mast cell stabilizers

These drugs are less effective than conventional antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids, but do apply in cases of pregnancy or for children. It usually take a few days after the decision to show the effectiveness of this drug.

  • The leukotriene antagonists

Antagonist of leukotriene receptors, despite the high price that treatment can be effective, a drug effective after a few days.

Treatments to cure or alleviate the causes

  • Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is divided into medical practice as shown in photo above by a specialist (immunologist) for example, first we search the allergen and then trying by repetition to “habituate” the body to the allergen that the body no longer responds. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

  • Homeopathy

Homeopathy can be used early in the season (Western North such as early spring for the case of pollen problems) to desensitize hay fever. Products are sold in a pharmacy, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
